The Journey Ahead

As many of you know, last summer Dean Klonoff traveled to India and met with law school deans, professors, and practicing lawyers throughout the country. As a result of his enthusiastic recommendation to the faculty, this year the law school signed memoranda of understanding with three of the top national law universities in India: NALSAR University of Law (Hyderabad); National Law School of India University (Bangalore); and National Law University (Delhi).
In July, Dean Klonoff and I will be going to India to continue to make arrangements with these schools for faculty and student exchanges. We will also meet with administrators and faculty at another top school, the National University of Juridical Sciences (Kolkata), whose dean was out of town last year and so unable to meet with Dean Klonoff. Finally, we will be be following up on contacts the Dean made last year--and making new contacts--to identify summer and semester externship opportunities for Lewis & Clark law students. We have some exciting interviews set up with law firms, NGOs, and corporations.
Dean Klonoff will start his trip in Mumbai. I’ll start mine in Hyderabad. Then we’ll meet up in Bangalore and both visit Kolkata and Delhi. We will also have the wonderful opportunity to spend some time in Dehradun, in the foothills of the Himalayas, with M.C. Mehta, the foremost environmental lawyer in India and head of the M.C. Mehta Environmental Foundation. Mr. Mehta is hoping to visit the Lewis & Clark campus this coming fall or winter, so stay tuned for news about that.
Technology and internet access permitting, I will start posting information about our visit as soon as I recover from the jet lag (23 hours in airplanes, 10 hours laying over in various terminals).
NOTE:  If you are accessing this blog through the Law School's web page and are having trouble getting to later postings, try going directly to!
